August 2019 Lived and worked in Lagos, Nigeria David Herbert Dale was a celebrated British–Nigerian artist renowned for his extraordinary versatility and prolific career spanning more than five decades. Born in Kano to a British father and Itsekiri mother, he spent his early childhood in the UK before returning to attend secondary school in Lagos, where he studied under the mentorship of Bruce Onobrakpeya. Dale graduated with a BA in Fine Arts and Art History from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1971, specializing in illustration and graphic design . A master of mediums, Dale created works across an astonishing variety of 23 forms, including stained glass, beadwork, mosaics, charcoal, watercolor, lino printing, etching, and metalwork, distinguished by their technical finesse and minimalist energy. His public commissions adorn many notable landmarks, such as stained-glass installations at Our Saviour’s Church in Onikan, mosaics in St. Agnes Church, and murals in the MTN Building (Ibadan), Nigerian Stock Exchange, State House (Marina), Shell Headquarters, and other significant venues. Dale was also deeply involved in Nigeria’s art community as graphic consultant for FESTAC ’77, and for thirteen years he lectured in Visual Communication at the University of Lagos. He participated in over seventy exhibitions since his debut in 1967, both locally and internationally.
