b. 25 September 1971, Lagos, Nigeria Lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria John Ogbeta is a Lagos-based mixed-media artist and painter whose practice bridges textured abstraction and figurative expression. A graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, where he earned both his National Diploma and Higher National Diploma in Painting, he is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artists and the ArtZero group. Ogbeta’s art is distinguished by its use of recycled and repurposed materials such as jute, rope, fabric, foil, and plastic, combined with bold lines and vibrant colours to craft relief works rich in texture and emotional intensity. In his 2021 solo exhibition Hysteria, he spotlighted the intersection of art and mental health, exploring the emotional impact of socio-economic and political stressors on individuals. Works like Tamed, Subtle Gender, Unbroken, and Scared as Hell employ mixed media on plywood to convey narratives of resilience, anxiety, and hope. Ogbeta’s imaginative approach has earned him international recognition, with his works featured in collections across West Africa, Europe, Australia, and North America.
