Biography
b. 1996, Nigeria Lives and works in London, UK, and also in Nigeria and Berlin Joseph Aina is a Nigerian British artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting and conceptual art. He holds a BA in Law and Psychology from the University of Kent (2018), followed by a Graduate Diploma and MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London (2022), completed on a full scholarship. Since graduating, he has undertaken residencies at Changing Room Gallery in London, Prior Art Space in Berlin, Live Art in Nigeria, and Vannucci in Italy. Aina’s work explores duality, identity, and psychological landscapes through richly layered process-based painting employing oils, acrylics, chalk, and paper. He often references street art aesthetics and Black cultural narratives, creating canvases that feel like visual biographies or urban palimpsests. His exhibition history includes group shows such as Buffer at Guts Gallery in London, Patterns of Identity at Prior Art Space in Barcelona, and The Life of Us at Prior Art Space in Berlin, as well as solo presentations including Looking for a Saviour at Prior Art Space in Berlin and The Movement Within at Berntson Bhattacharjee Gallery in London. He is the recipient of the RCA Student Scholarship Award and was shortlisted for the Valerie Beston Award by Artist Trust.
