Biography
Biography
b. 1986, Bottrop, Germany Lives and works in Los Angeles, USA (formerly in Düsseldorf and Cologne, Germany) Peppi Bottrop is a German abstract artist renowned for his frenetic, layered compositions rendered in charcoal, graphite, and soot. A graduate and Meisterschüler of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (2014), he was mentored by prominent figures such as Albert Oehlen, Andreas Schulze, and Jutta Koether, all of whom significantly shaped his visual language. Rooted in the industrial landscapes of the Ruhr region, once Germany’s heartland of coal mining, his work translates the emotional residue of postindustrial spaces into expressive, maze-like structures. Through repetitive, rhythmic linework, Bottrop’s drawings and paintings map both personal memory and environmental entropy, embodying a tension between construction and decay. His practice has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions, including Jungle Rapture (London), Sabotage (Berlin), Tropic of Bottrop (Oldenburg), Dream On (Düsseldorf), and Eliminate Nature (London). In addition, he has contributed to significant group exhibitions across Europe and North America, such as Jetzt! Junge Malerei in Deutschland, Line Packers (Los Angeles), and Different Strokes (France).
