Biography
Biography
b. 1989, Harare, Zimbabwe Lives and works in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe Prudence Chimutuwah is a contemporary visual artist whose mixed-media collages blend recycled materials, such as decommissioned Zimbabwe banknotes, printed textiles, and print-derived text, with acrylic and paint on canvas. The work emerged after she trained in painting and sculpture at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design (2009–2011) and reconsidered her sculptural trajectory in favor of collage from 2015 onward. She draws inspiration from prominent female sculptors Seminar Mpofu and Colleen Madamombe, as well as the creative energy of the Chitungwiza Arts Centre. Chimutuwah’s luminous, silhouette-driven imagery centers on the experience of the 21st-century woman—highlighting their economic aspirations, spiritual yearning, and spirit of resilience. Her expressive palettes and layered mediums channel contemporary African fashion, text, and cultural symbols, positioning women as the nurturers and catalysts within society. She has showcased her work in major group exhibitions at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, Wild Geese Art Fair, Gallery Delta, and Akka Project (Dubai). Solo highlights include Purple Rhythm (2020), nominated for Zimbabwe’s National Arts Merit Awards, and The Future is Her (2024) presented during Women’s Month. She’s also participated in artist residencies and youth mentorships in South Africa and Nigeria.
